Call for solutions:
How to reduce stigmatization
and promote labor market integration of people deprived of liberty?

Send us your proposal until July 18th. We will support the implementation of up to three solutions

The challenge

Once released, people that have been in prison face a social stigma and multiple barriers to labor market integration that make it nearly impossible for them to restart their lives and reintegrate into society. There are 1.5 million men, women and youth in prisons in Latina America and the Caribbean; the majority of them have not been sentenced and many are imprisoned for non-violent crimes. Their successful integration into society and the labor market are key for the entire society. Not only in order to avoid recidivism, but also to convert them into active contributors to the economy and give them a second chance and real possibility for rehabilitation.

The competition is open

We are searching for thinkers and makers, for innovative, provocative and cutting edge ideas that will help improve the lives of people released from prison. We are looking for concrete proposals based on new ways to use technologies, projects that take new perspectives and research that aims at shedding a light on this problem in the region. The solutions to be presented may be in the phase of idea-building or already a project in implementation and should be applied to people in or outside of prison in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Put your ideas into action

Participate in this call to generate social innovations that help improve the reintegration of people in prison or already released from prison. We will financially support the implementation of up to three proposals with 5.000 to 10.000 US dollars per project. We invite individuals and companies, universities, foundations, marketing and communication companies, media outlet producers, public institutions, NGOs and other actors linked to the world of entrepreneurship and innovation from all Latin America and the Caribbean to participate.

We propose the following areas to present solutions for this contest

Design of technological solutions

We seek ideas that innovate in the use of technology to solve this problem. How can we use technology to reduce social stigmas and/or promote reemployment?

Entrepreneurship, innovation and networks

How can we direct the entrepreneurial and creative spirit of people in prison and those released towards business opportunities with potential for growth? How can new networks be created for them?

Communication and marketing for social change

We seek ideas that address this challenge using audiovisual or journalistic projects or communication and social marketing campaigns that take an innovative approach.

Education, training and employment

We want to connect the supply with the demand for labor. In what areas can we train people in prison and those already released? How can we connect them with new job opportunities?

Research, legal and public policyanalysis

We need to generate more knowledge about social stigmas and access barriers forthe labor market faced by people released from prison. Do you have a research proposal?

Your idea does not fit into any of the dimensions above?
