PRIZE CATEGORIES

Objectives of the Contest:

The IDB aims to accelerate the penetration of broadband connectivity in Latin America and the Caribbean through an innovative initiative called the Broadband Platform. This initiative is comprised of four pillars, one of which focuses on capacity building and the promotion of electronic services to contribute to the development of broadband demand in small and medium enterprises.

The creation of these awards stems from the following objectives:

  • Raise the awareness of the importance of ICT for firm innovation and competitiveness – both in public institutions and the private sector;
  • Identify and disseminate best practices for ICT promotion in firms; and
  • Identify and disseminate innovative uses of ICT in Latin American and Caribbean firms (broadband, e-commerce, and social networks).

About the Awards:

All candidates were informed of who the winners were before March 22nd of 2013. The IDB will deliver the prizes during The Ministers Summit of Information Society in Montevideo, the 4th of April of 2013. The deadline to participate in this contest was December 31st of 2012.

INNOVATIC awards have five different categories:

1. Best program for promoting ICT penetration in firms

Evaluation criteria

This award is for the institution that has achieved the best results in terms of promoting ICTs for purposes of competitiveness and innovation in enterprises. Results must be measurable in terms of increased penetration and productive use of ICT in firms.

2. E-Government service with the best contribution to increasing competitiveness

This award is for the institution that provides an electronic service that makes the greatest contribution to increasing the competitiveness of enterprises. Examples include, but are not limited to a service (or set of services) to: simplify and reduce the duration of relevant and frequent procedures, help companies identify business opportunities and/or do business (access customers and suppliers) more quickly, provide key information for business decision-making, contribute to the digitalization of firms which may bring other positive outcomes, or improve the business climate.

3. Most innovative use of broadband connectivity in firms

This award is for the company that presents the most innovative use of broadband connectivity for innovation and competitiveness. Examples include, but are not limited to use of broadband connectivity to create or improve: business models, processes and activities, design, develop and/or deliver products and services, services that contribute to the development of other companies, increased revenues and reduced costs, improved quality of life, human capital, systems to address the needs of the most disadvantaged or firms in the lower ends of the value chain of any specific sector, or contributions to employment generation.

4. Most innovative use of electronic commerce

This award is for the company that presents the most innovative use of e-commerce for business development. Examples include, but are not limited to e-commerce for: on-demand production, finding better suppliers, export, open innovation with customers and suppliers, reduction in transaction costs, improved customer care, predicting the behavior of client demand, addressing the needs of the most disadvantaged or firms in the lower ends of the value chain of the sector, or improving access to key products and services.

5. Most innovative use of social networks for business

This award is for the company that makes the most innovative use of social networks for business development. This can be an innovative use and / or the development of social networks for branding, customer attraction and retention, open innovation, vendor selection, access to new markets, among others.
